BREAKING: Rights Activist Youngerson Matete Receives Threatening Message Over Court Challenge to Mnangagwa's 2030 Bid
HARARE – Rights activist Youngerson Matete says he has received a threatening message apparently linked to his legal challenge against President Emmerson Mnangagwa's reported bid to extend his tenure to 2030.
According to Matete, an unidentified man delivered an envelope to his Harare home at around 2PM on Thursday while he was away. The envelope was handed to a domestic helper and allegedly contained a message reading: “Withdraw your application or [image of bullet]. Your choice.”
Matete is currently pursuing a High Court application challenging efforts to extend President Mnangagwa's term of office beyond the constitutional limit.
Speaking to ZimLive, Matete said he would not be intimidated by the threat.
“It's a tough moment, but I am not withdrawing my application,” he said.
The incident is likely to raise fresh concerns about the safety of activists and litigants involved in politically sensitive court cases. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the alleged threat, and authorities had not yet commented on the matter.
The development comes as debate continues over proposals that could allow President Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030.
